Ganesh Chaturthi is a popular festival among the Marathi community in India and is celebrated in a big way in the state of Maharashtra. Outside India celebrations take place in different parts of Europe, Asia and North America.
In Germany, celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi takes place on a big scale in Munich, Frankfurt and Berlin. The main celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi in Germany takes place in the Shree Ganesha Hindu Temple of Berlin for ten days.Every day is the evening the priest performs the mangal aarti and on the 10th day the idol is immersed in water better known as’ visarjan’ according to Hindu rituals.
The biggest celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi in Germany happens in Munich, which is organised by The Maharashtra Mandal. Unlike other places celebrations here take place only for one day. The morning is reserved for traditional puja and aarti, followed by lunch in the afternoon. In the evening the organisers arrange for musical consorts and cultural events.
If you are looking to spend the festival in a little different way, apart from participating in traditional pujas and visarjan rituals, you can participate along with your kids in Erlangen’s eco-friendly clay Ganesh modelling workshop. In this workshop, children learn the art of making Ganesh idols from clay. The fees collected from this workshop are donated to an orphanage.
Ganesh Chaturthi is also celebrated in Frankfurt and Hamburg, but not on a big scale. The event is usually arranged by the local Hindu Indian Community andtakes place for two days during the week end.
